The feedback gathered will play a crucial role in informing the Commission’s approach
to ensuring these markets remain vibrant and competitive.

The EUs Proactive Stance

The Commission is taking a proactive approach to investigating large digital market players and generative AI developers including scrutinizing Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI under the EU Merger Regulation.  This vigilance is crucial in preventing monopolistic practices and ensuring that these innovative markets remain accessible and beneficial to all.

In parallel, the EU is proactively tackling the challenges of emerging technologies: in July 2023 Communication on Web 4.0 and virtual worlds was released in July 2023, and in December 2023, a landmark political agreement was achieved by the European Parliament and the Council on the Commission’s Artificial Intelligence Act proposal.

Virtual Worlds and Generative AI: A Brief Overview

Virtual worlds, characterized by their immersive, persistent environments, blend physical and digital realities, offering diverse applications from socializing to transactional activities. Generative AI, on the other hand, is revolutionizing content creation, capable of producing synthetic audio, images, videos, and text in response to user prompts. These technologies are not just futuristic concepts but are rapidly becoming integral to various industries, evidenced by the significant venture capital investments they attract in the EU.

For more information, stakeholders and interested parties are encouraged to visit the dedicated webpage of DG Competition, which contains the calls for contributions where non-confidential versions of the contributions will be published.
